The Swing Starts Before You Step In
Steelhead days are won before the first cast. Not with luck (typically) but by being prepared. The river changes fast: flows bump, temps drop, clarity shifts, and suddenly yesterday’s “perfect” setup feels out of place. A fishing report yesterday, may not be the same today.
Being Steelhead "Bum" river-ready is simple:
- Have a plan for depth. Carry a couple sink-tip options and flies that fish at different angles.
- Bring confidence patterns. A few proven intruders, leeches, and classics beat a cluttered box.
- Match the fly to the day. More contrast in off-color water, slimmer profiles when it’s clear, and adjust size before you panic-change runs.
- Keep it efficient. Spend time swinging, not digging through pockets.
That’s why we built our fly selection the way we did—steelhead flies that earn their spot on the leader. Patterns we trust in winter buckets, soft tailouts, and everything between. Hand-selected by anglers who fish them, backed by the Gorge Fly Shop team.
